The Process and Resources
In this WebQuest you work for a company that is interested in purchasing the rights to specific wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum to use for communication. The new owner wants to also know about uses, effects, and dangers of all portions of the electromagnetic spectrum to use in planning for future development. Your job is to do extensive research on all portions of the electromagnetic spectrum and prepare a presentation for the Board of Directors. You will ultimately focus on the portion of the spectrum that is used for communication and make a recommendation on a competitive bid price for the appropriate portion of the spectrum.
Your research group will consist of four team members. Each team member will be assigned a specific role, but work as needed to complete the project.

Phase 1 - Starting Simple
Use the Internet links below to answer the basic questions also listed below. Write your answers in a document. Be creative in exploring the information, so that you answer these questions as fully and insightfully as you can. Also be sure to use your own words.
1. What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
2. What is another name for an electromagnetic wave?
3. How are electromagnetic waves different from mechanical waves?
4. What are some terms associated with electromagnetic waves?
5. List the kinds of waves that make up the spectrum in order.
6. Who or what is ROY G BIV?
7. Explain the relationship among frequency, wavelength, and energy of electromagnetic waves.
* Take a quiz to see how much you have learned.
Phase 2 - The Big Picture
Now that your group has a strong background in Electromagnetic Wave principles, you can turn your focus to the specific frequencies and their uses. Construct a concept map to answer the following questions from your client, Wildcat Communications. (check here for a refresher on concept maps)
Note: Remember to write create your works cited page as you go. (Citation Maker or Bibliography Tool)
1. Explain the type of frequency and wavelength of the waves and the location on the spectrum.
2. Explain the practical applications of the waves.
3. Include any negative factors or health precautions.
4. Find pictures to accompany your explanations.
Phase 3 - Communication Frequencies
You have all learned about the different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Now it is time to present your knowledge and focus on the portion of the spectrum devoted to communication. You must design a presentation, including visuals, that will inform Wildcat Communications about the appropriate frequencies for communication and recommend bidding amounts. Include any major competitors in the field. Remember that your presentation should end with a bibliography that indicates where you learned about EM Waves.
